Delivered and Honored: The Promise of Psalm 91 “Embracing God’s Rescue and Blessings“
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ of truth and divine protection, today, we embark on a divine journey through the timeless wisdom of Psalm 91. This sacred passage has been hailed as one of the most powerful chapters and prayers in the Holy Bible, offering solace and strength to countless souls navigating the storms of life. As we delve into each verse of this remarkable psalm, may its words inspire us to find refuge under the shadow of the Almighty God and experience the profound love and care of our Heavenly Father.
Verse 1: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Our journey begins with an invitation to dwell in the shelter of the Most High, to abide in the presence of God. When we intentionally seek His refuge and make our home in His love, we discover a place of rest—an oasis of peace in the midst of life’s chaos. This verse encourages us to draw closer to the Divine, knowing that under His protection, we find solace and tranquillity.
Verse 2: “I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
In moments of uncertainty, let us declare boldly like the psalmist, acknowledging the Lord as our refuge and fortress. Our trust in Him becomes an unshakable foundation, for He is faithful and true. In times of distress, repeat this affirmation, strengthening your faith and reaffirming your unwavering belief in God’s protective embrace.
Verse 3: “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”
Just as a skilled hunter sets traps for birds, the adversities of life may ensnare us. However, the promise here is firm—God will rescue us from these snares, and He will deliver us from deadly threats. Our Lord is not only our refuge; He is our deliverer, pulling us out of the jaws of danger and leading us to safety.
Verse 4: “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”
Immerse yourself in the imagery of this verse, envisioning the nurturing embrace of a mother bird sheltering her young. Similarly, God’s love envelops us, providing a safe haven beneath His wings. His faithfulness becomes a shield, protecting us from the assaults of doubt and fear, and a rampart, a strong defence against the schemes of the enemy.
Verse 5: “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;”
Fear can grip our hearts in the darkest hours and in broad daylight. Yet, as believers, we are called to banish fear and trust in God’s unwavering protection. Night or day, the Lord’s shield of safety covers us, dispelling the terror that seeks to overwhelm our spirits.
Verse 6: “Nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.”
Even in the face of deadly diseases and rampant afflictions, we need not cower in fear. The psalmist reminds us that God’s protection is all-encompassing. He safeguards us from the hidden threats lurking in darkness and the perilous challenges that arise in broad daylight.
Verse 7: “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”
The world around us may be fraught with dangers and calamities, but God’s promise remains steadfast. Even amidst the chaos and destruction, we remain protected by His loving hand. The psalmist encourages us to take comfort in this assurance, knowing that our Heavenly Father is vigilant in guarding His children.
Verse 8: “Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”
As we abide under God’s shelter, we witness His divine justice at work. We may see the consequences of evil choices and witness the downfall of the wicked, but it will not touch us. The Lord’s protection extends beyond physical safety; it encompasses our hearts and souls, shielding us from the corruption of the world.
Verse 9: “Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;”
Here lies a powerful truth—our declaration of God as our refuge establishes a profound connection. As we make the Most High our dwelling place, we anchor our souls to the eternal source of strength. Trusting in the Lord and seeking His presence allows us to walk with unwavering faith, undeterred by the storms of life.
Verse 10: “There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”
Hold onto this promise tightly, for it is a testament to the unyielding nature of God’s protection. No harm, no disaster, no tragedy shall prevail over us when we are shielded by His love. Trust in His sovereignty and fear will dissipate in the face of His unassailable power.
Verse 11: “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
Divine beings, His angels, are dispatched to watch over us, guiding and guarding our every step. Their presence is a testament to God’s boundless love and care for His children. We are not alone in our journey; we are surrounded by celestial guardians, divinely appointed to protect us.
Verse 12: “They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.”
In the path of life, we may encounter stumbling blocks and obstacles. Yet, God’s angels, appointed to care for us, shall lift us up, sparing us from harm and ensuring that we remain steadfast on our journey of faith. Their watchful eyes prevent us from falling prey to the traps set before us.
Verse 13: “Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.”
Such is the power of God’s protection that even the most formidable adversaries hold no dominion over us. With God as our guide, we fearlessly confront challenges, treading upon the lion and the cobra—symbols of danger and evil. Through His strength, we conquer all that seeks to undermine our faith.
Verse 14: “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.”
God’s love becomes the catalyst for divine intervention in our lives. Our love for Him prompts Him to rescue and protect us. When we acknowledge His name with reverence and adoration, we invite His omnipotent presence into our lives. Such devotion elicits His response, tender and swift.
Verse 15: “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.”
The Lord hears the cries of His children. In moments of distress and turmoil, when we call upon Him in faith, He responds. His presence accompanies us through every trial, and in His loving mercy, He delivers us from our afflictions. Moreover, He honours us with His divine favour, bestowing upon us the privilege of being His chosen ones
Verse 16: “With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation”.
In my benevolence, I shall grant him the gift of a long life. Throughout the Old Testament, a prolonged existence is consistently regarded as a cherished blessing and a distinct reward for steadfast obedience.
