Jesus did for others

Study of What Jesus Did for Others — Luke 13:10–17

  1. The Place and the Moment of Encounter

This miracle took place in a synagogue on the Sabbath day, where Jesus was teaching. He saw a woman who had been crippled by a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years — bent over and unable to stand straight. Jesus immediately discerned her oppression through the Holy Spirit, who reveals the hidden causes of suffering. Her healing came without her asking; it was initiated purely by divine compassion and discernment. Before this event, Jesus had been teaching about repentance and the kingdom of God, and now He demonstrated that the kingdom is not in words only but in power and authority to set the oppressed free.

  1. Key Words and Covenant Insights

“Spirit of infirmity” — the root of her condition was spiritual, not merely physical.

“Eighteen years” — shows the long-term bondage under the enemy’s power.

“Woman, you are loosed” — a command of release, spoken with divine authority.

“Laid His hands on her” — the physical contact symbolized impartation of healing power.

“Immediately she was made straight” — the miracle was instant and complete.

“Ought not this woman… be loosed?” — under both the Old Covenant (as a daughter of Abraham) and the New Covenant (through Christ), healing is a covenant right for God’s people.

  1. Why Jesus Did What He Did — The Heart of the Healer

Jesus healed to reveal the Father’s heart, showing that God’s nature is love and compassion. But this miracle also raises a deeper truth — does God desire to heal only His chosen people, or all humanity? Scripture proves that God’s healing mercy extends to everyone who believes: “Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). In Matthew 15:30–31, great multitudes came, and He healed them all — Jews and Gentiles alike. Healing is not limited to covenant lineage but is the overflow of divine love to all who come in faith.
He performed this miracle to demonstrate that mercy outweighs ritual and that God’s desire is wholeness for His creation.

  1. Lessons for Healing and Teaching Ministry — Faith in Action

Discernment: Some conditions have spiritual roots; seek the Spirit’s insight.

Authority: Speak healing boldly — Jesus said, “You are loosed.” Words of faith carry divine power.

Compassion: Healing flows from love, not performance.

Covenant Faith: Healing belongs to God’s children.
In ministry, combine faith, compassion, and bold obedience to bring freedom to the afflicted. As a coach teaches discipline to an athlete, believers must train themselves through prayer, fasting, and love to operate in the authority Jesus gave them.

  1. Why Christians Fall Short — And Living Proof of Miracles Today

Many Christians fall short because they doubt their authority in Christ and are influenced by church teachings that do not believe all can be healed. This mindset has weakened faith across generations. Yet Scripture clearly teaches otherwise: “He healed them all” (Matthew 12:15) and “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Limiting God’s power through doctrine is unbelief, not truth.

2 Real Evidence:
1️⃣ Healing from blindness: Reported by Christianity Today (2019), a Mozambican woman who had been blind for 12 years regained her sight after community prayer and fasting. The account was medically examined and confirmed by local health professionals — a testament that God still restores sight to the blind. [Source: Christianity Today, 2019 — Global Prayer and Healing Report].

2️⃣ Cancer remission through fasting and prayer: In 2022, The Guardian shared the story of an American woman whose aggressive cancer vanished after her church united in fasting and prayer. Hospital records from MD Anderson Cancer Center documented the disappearance of her tumors, leaving doctors stunned. [Source: The Guardian, 2022 — Faith and Healing Feature].

These modern testimonies prove that miracles did not end with the apostles. When believers rise in faith, fasting, and obedience, the same Jesus who healed in the synagogue still heals today — because His Word and power have never changed.

Question to Ponder:
Did God permit suffering upon humanity as part of His great redemptive plan—even though He declares that we are His children and heirs? Scripture says, “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26), and again, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16). Yet despite this divine identity, humanity still endures pain and suffering. Why would a loving Father allow this?

From the beginning, God granted mankind dominion over creation: “Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:26). The first man, Adam, was also given free will and authority to name every creature: “Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them” (Genesis 2:19).

God gave man authority and freedom — but with freedom comes the possibility of choice, and with choice came the fall. Yet through Christ, that lost authority is restored. Healing, therefore, is not only God’s mercy toward suffering humanity; it is His sign that redemption is complete and His kingdom is among us.

Take-Home Golden Nugget
In the synagogue that Sabbath day, Jesus revealed more than power — He revealed the Father’s heart. The woman’s back was bent, but the greater bondage was unseen. Her healing shows that God not only restores the body but also straightens what sin, shame, or sorrow has bent within the soul.

The kingdom of God is not a distant hope; it is present wherever Jesus is welcomed. Healing is not a relic of the past but a living promise for those who believe. Just as He said, “Woman, you are loosed,” He still speaks freedom to every believer bowed under the weight of affliction.

When faith meets divine compassion, miracles happen. The same Lord who touched her is ready to touch you — not because you earned it, but because He is good. The power that straightened her back can straighten your life, your mind, and your walk with God today.
